Knox Street Pedestrianisation, Double Bay

This concept design with Atlas Urban was a project to highlight how pedestrianisation of the main extent of Knox Street could be completely transformed to improve the streetscape, benefit local shop owners and hotels and create a new focus for Knox Street. The design involved limiting vehicular access to limited low speed one way access with restricted parking. The design team prescribed that some low flow vehicle access and parking contribute to the success of these projects, as complete pedestrianisation can negatively affect increasing activity.

The design and vehicular flow can be altered between a weekday and weekend 'mode'. Weekend markets and entertainment create a completely different character and atmosphere to weekday' business mode' This living street aims to use structural soils and other innovations to enable large shade trees and access to coexist.
