Newcastle Bus Interchange

The Newcastle Bus Interchange was a multi-stakeholder transport initiative to provide Newcastle with the bus services connection with Newcastle Station (the terminus of the interurban service). The public spaces varied from highly urbanised living laneways of highly activated spaces during the day and after hours. The street design needed to be consistent with the Newcastle City standards, but was reinterpreted for this special site.

The connection to the rain interchange needs to be seamless between the light rail and heavy rail stations. New shade trees were to puncture the urban laneways and concourse.

A new linear park was established between the light rail line and bus interchange to provide additional seating, grassed area, native massed planting and shade trees. These spaces are breakout spaces from the bus waiting area, greatly increasing the amenity of these traditionally staid and functional environments.
